New application note on cold-writing

Today we published a new application note on cold-writing. Our cold-writing protocol improves reproducible grid preparation. With this protocol we routinely get over 100 squares with vitrified ice per grid. And even fragile samples like liposomes can be applied on the grid.

Gordon Research Conference on 3D EM with exciting program

GRC on 3D EM with special session on specimen preparation challenges and solutions

The Gordon Research Conference on 3D EM (Three dimensional Electron Microscopy) 2024 takes place in Spain in June. This year, the GRC focuses on “bridging gaps between cell, structural and computational biology”. To this end, it has a special session on “specimen preparation challenges and solutions”. With this session, the conference addresses the existing bottleneck in sample preparation for cryo-EM. It is therefore our pleasure to announce that Andreas Engel will present how a solution using an automated pipette-robot can make sample preparation more reliable. The use of pipettes even enables integration of extra inline preparation steps.

If you are interested to join, please check the GRC website for application information on attendance of this meeting.

New application scientist at cryoWrite

After looking back on a successful business year 2023, we are now looking ahead again. We start the new year with expanding the team and hiring a new colleague.

With Nadia Antoniadis, we recruited a new application scientist at cryoWrite to support our customers and the implementation of new modules on the cryoWriter. Nadia has a bachelor’s degree in Nanoscience and did her Masters and PhD in experimental physics. After having worked on quantum computing, she will be applying her skills on more biological applications.

Season’s greetings 2023

2023 cryoWriter Christmas tree

It is Christmas time: Instead of dispensing proteins on hydrophilized grids in a spiral form, we provided the cryoWriter with coordinates in a different pattern! We omitted the on-board glow discharger to keep a better confinement of the tree and used ink to better see it in the camera.

We wish you all Merry Christmas and a good start in 2024.

Hands over at cryoWrite AG: Patrick Frederix (left) takes over from Andreas Engel, co-founder of cryoWrite AG. Andreas Engel will stay active in the company as chief scientific officer. With his passion and energy, he will lead new developments for the company, using his many years of experience in the electron microscopy community.

The cryoWrite AG is growing, more people are employed, and the first devices are delivered. This also means that new expertise is required. Besides his excellent knowledge of structural biologists’ needs, Patrick is experienced in instrument development, applications, and services and brings the required management background.

Patrick has worked as an application scientist at Nanosurf for the last thirteen years, leading this department over the last twelve years. In his new job, he is looking forward to joining the team to make the cryoWriter successful.

A technical solution is already in place. Now we need to show the EM community what we have to offer and how our solution can help to get excellent results faster – which is of interest in both, industry and academic research.

Patrick Frederix

We welcome our new CEO and wish him a good start.

Patrick Frederix
Short Biography

Patrick studied applied physics in Eindhoven (Netherlands) with PhD in fluorescent microscopy. Afterward, he moved to Switzerland in 2001 and joined the lab of Andreas Engel in the Department of Structural Biology of the Biozentrum in Basel. He joined Nanosurf in 2010, became head of applications and services, and was part of the extended board.
